Outdated?

Postby hoteldebotel » Mon Dec 21, 2009 1:56 am

Okay, can anyone explain me why ANYONE in this world is still using Visual Basic 6.0?

It's a langauge from the freaking 90's, most of the downloadable controls etc.. are for .NET!

Can anyone explain me why some people will just not migrate from 6.0 to VB.NET?
I could think of millions of reasons, and maybe the most important:

We don't live in Windows NT , 2000 , 98 anymore! So stop giving us this ugly flat GUI!

I hope i didn't start a flamewar, just curious.

Okay, let me explain who I am.

I'm a professional programmer for a company in The Netherlands that specializes in Banking and School software.
As seeing from your spelling, you're about 12 years old, and the only language you know is 1337 and Visual Basic 6.0 .

I am a free-lance web developer that is specialized in Action script 2.0 + 3.0 + PHP , JavaScript , HTML, AJAX , ASP.NET , and i also make my living out of that.

Since i do this stuff for a living, please do not state i don't know anything about the language. I've personally used it for a long time, but then switched to VB.NET and C#.NET .

So before banging your head like a retard against your keyboard, do a little research, and find a couple of arguments before stating such none-sense.

Let’s talk a little bit about your statement:
"Most of your programs in your computer are made in VB6"

This statement makes me sort of giggle, are you just kidding me?
To correct you, 60% of the programs on your little computer are made C++ with different frameworks for each one.
The only program i can imagine written in VB6 is uhh... wait.. NONE!

If you have any more arguments stating why VB6 is "Teh Ubar Ausum" , please tell me, and
I'll be happy to awnser :D

PS:
I'll be launching my portofolio website ASAP, incase you don't believe me.

Please could you not use CAPS LOCK when you are writing your posts. This is the second time I have noticed this and it isn't appropriate.

Can anyone explain why so many people in this world are still using manual toothbrushes? To answer both questions simply its because people like to use them and because they are familiar with it. Why should anyone upgrade to Windows 7 if they're happy with Windows XP? or upgrade to Visual Basic.NET if they're happy with Visual Basic 6.0? Just because something is old it doesn't make it useless and just because something is newer doesn't mean it's better either! ;)

So what? Just because you have a piece of paper that says "You can do Visual Basic.NET" doesn't mean that you're any good at it. Yeah you understand it but to really get good at something you need to have years of practice. I'm not saying that you aren't good at Visual Basic.NET because I don't know you but just because you have a degree in it doesn't make you better than everyone else.

It's true that about 60-70% of all programmers use BASIC and Microsoft's Visual Basic.NET to write their applications but you can't say Visual Basic 6.0 is rubbish because when it comes to the actual code Visual Basic 6.0 is better in my opinion. And I say this because BASIC and Visual Basic.NET are like two separate programming languages. Sure they have similarities but if you tried to write an application using BASIC (without using Microsoft's Visual Basic.NET) then you would probably get stuck because without the .NET Framework your Visual Basic.NET applications are nothing! :o

I love VB.6.0.. i think it is the shit, Ive been using it for almost 15yrs now.

It like if someone asks you whats so good about a 1968 mustang convertible when you could be driving a 2000 model mustang after all the 2000 model has fuel injection and a computer to heat the seats and air bags and a FM radio and 1,000s of other stuff that the original doesn't have ..

Each to his own my Friend.

It a never ending argument which is better the Xbox of the Sony ... Chev Or Ford

Owww and i cant spell for shit ether and my Grey hair says I'm not 12 .. although that is the length of me shlong

arrr ya see Ive never read a programing book in my life.. well thats not true i read 3 pages of learn VB in 24hrs and learn C++ in 21 days and i just thought WTF !!! mind you id already been useing vb for 6 yrs when i read that learn vb in 24hrs and i did not understand a single sentence.

Thats about when i started teaching ppl to program.. doing it the way i would have liked to have been taught.

Who likes what is not a reflection on there programing ability's Aeon is a great programmer but cant use 6.0 to make a clock .. i have called Aeon up to ask some of the most stupid Qs to do with .net stuff that makes me feel like Ive just thought about starting to program yesterday ..

Theres a old Aussie Saying ...

What ever floats ya boat ..

I am trying to be better at .net as it has got some stuff in there that i find handy to use.. on the other hand there is stuff in there that i find totally stupid and i swear they have just done it to make it harder ..

The perfect program would be VB6.0.Net were MS would say now Gym_ tell us what you would like in this program .. and i would say make this the same as 6.0 and make this as is in .NET and it would be a stunning peace of Kit that old school programmers would be lining up to use .. instead of running away from because of impractical protocols..

Anyway thats my 2c

There actually is converter for this sort of thing, like VBto Converter. This program can take a vb 6.0 code and convert it to .net or VC++ or a few other types of code. The problem is none of these converting programs are free. I wish .net had a built in converter that would actually work for either vb or .net codes and just convert them all on it's own at compiling.
